Watch Types – There are so many to choose from.

“What time is it?"… This is the common question that you will hear from people who are not fond of wearing watches. They may say that it is not as important as wearing eyeglasses or bringing a cellular phone everyday. But for some, watches are considered as treasures as more and more people are engaged into collecting different types of watches, a hobby that is more suited to citizens in the high society. Some wristwatches are considered works of art, because of the unique craftsmanship that is required to make such timepieces. Because of this, they are often treated as jewelries. The higher the price, the more valuable it becomes.

There are many types of watches that are available in the market nowadays, depending on their features and functions. Some are analog (time is determined by the “hands" moving in clock-wise motion) while some are digital (time is displayed in numbers). Some uses LCD (liquid crystal display) while some uses LED (light-emitting diodes display) to show time. Additional watch types are pocket watches (with cover and is attached to a chain), day-date watches (has a little window that shows day and date) and diver’s watches (water-resistant, can tolerate water splashes or rain).

The two main categories of watches are the mechanical (automatic) watches and the quartz (crystal) watches. The mechanical watches are the most precisely engineered watches, making them more expensive and collectible. These are self-winding watches and are not battery-operated. These use impulses, which are the result of the movement of the wrist, to turn the balance wheel. Compared to quartz watches, mechanical watches display very poor time and more prone to failure as they are frequently sensitive to temperature and position.

On the other hand, quartz watches are electronic watches that use electricity as its source of power. These rely on battery for its energy that makes the tiny quartz crystal inside to vibrate at a very stable frequency (32,768 times a second). Though considered one of the cheap watches types, quartz watches still make timekeeping more accurate than mechanical watches.

Watches are a part of everyday life as they keep us track of the time. These valuable pieces make it easier for us to follow our designated schedules. Though when choosing what watch to buy, it is important to consider its functionality and price. With a lot of watches available, keeping this in mind will dictate you on what watch fits your needs.
